Amazon which acquired the startup Zoox in June 2020, getting a green signal from California to test driverless cars on public roads without a backup driver.

Zoox has had a permit to test driverless cars with the backup drive since 2016 but according to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles, the permit is not for all public roads in the state but on specified roads near Foster city headquarters.

Driverless cars are approved to operate in fair weather conditions, including light rain or fog with a maximum speed of 45mph.

Amazon’s Zoox is aiming to build a purpose-built electric vehicle, test, and validate the automated vehicle technology.
